Sara Watkins and Donovan Frankenreiter
Last night I went out to the 9:30 club to check out Sara Watkins, of Nickel Creek. I’ve always loved her voice and fiddle playing, spending countless hours listening to them. The group has split to pursue solo projects, and this is the beginning of hers (she’s releasing an album soon that was produced by John Paul Jones!) She sounded great by herself, but I think if she wants to truly succeed she will need a little bit of backing..
Donovan Frankenreiter played after… and he was awesome. A funkier version of Jack Johnson, with a full band. Apparently he is good friends with Jack and also an avid surfer. He played a great set (that inspired me to pick up his cd), with some awesome jazz/funk/acoustic songs… but the one that stuck with me was a slower one he wrote for his son called “Call Me Papa”.. there was something about the line ” You can call me papa, and ill call you baby/Don’t forget your mamas my, baby too” that I thought was really great….
